Summary

This paper investigate the possibility and efficiency of a solid waste-printing paper management system within the Technical University of Crete. In order to create a more environmentally friendly University, it is necessary for all faculties, staff members, students and the entire society of Chania to participate in such effort. Solid waste recycling can be a valuable resource, contributing to generated income of the Technical University. Initially, quoting information about the white paper production process as well as the recycling process and benefits. Moreover, a bibliographic research is carried out on the paper waste of the Universities, on the behavior of citizens on recycling programs as well as solutions that can be given to address this issue. Then, the dynamics and the impacts of such an endeavor for the Technical University are recorded. Finally, 3 different possible scenarios were designed both in terms of the waste volume and the treatment. Economic and technical studies were carried out calculating the investment and operation costs of these systems. A 10-year contributions as well as their environmental footprints were calculated too. The results of this research showed that in order for such a project to succeed, the participation of the entire local community is needed, while at the same time, it can be very profitable for the Technical University.
