Summary

The present research paper analyzes at a historical level the developments and the course of Urban planning from the beginning of the 20th century until 2022 for the city of Heraklion. It focuses on the period from the end of World War II until the second decade of the 21st century in the areas outside the Venetian Walls of the old city. It makes an in-depth analysis for the respective time period around: a) the historical events and developments and what impact they had on the expansion of the city, b) the total extensions of the city outside the walls by comparing maps and aerial photographs in relation to the previous period, c) the forms and types of the specific extensions and their categorization, in sub-areas of the city through comparison of maps and aerial photographs. After the end of the analysis of all the time periods, the results of the research are obtained. Specifically, they focus on how the extensions were made, the similarities and differences between the areas of analysis. It also examines how the design worked, and what its role is in the overall course of the extensions.
