Summary

The present conceptual group art exhibition explores the relations between the symptomatology of manic depression and cultural tactics in contemporary capitalism, from the point of the psyche of the subject in them. It is the diploma thesis of the curator, who studies in The School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete, and it constitutes their attempt to connect the alienating experience of the disease with the social reality in order to be liberated from it through comprehension. If production and consumption are libidinal, then how can any social contract but not cultivate a mental economy in accord with it? When we know that environmental, geopolitical, health and monetary crises are finally expressed as finances and lead to multiple mental disorder cases in the general population, why would we not acknowledge the latter ones as crises of exchange? Meaning, crises in which the information cannot be metabolized for the benefit of forming coordinated, healthy selves, to the end of returning new, palatable information that will secure a harmonic -in macro- circulation of drive.Furthermore, today, crises and accidents have become the salient engine for political wakening. Power relations, dynamics and the limits of superstructure technology, that automatically provides anything we consider a standard within Western civilization as consumers, are revealed to us through crises. Nevertheless, the same automation, and the particularization it requires, raises insuperable obstacles before the collective understanding of the production mechanisms and a submissive relationship with these politically important apparatuses. Can we substantiate that we have not introjected this condition? And what do we become to be able to be part of the transactional realm again? Capitalism functions to its very ends; apart from whether the current technocratic capitalistic democracies goad us into pathogenesis, do they profit from the identity and the reasoning tools we will construct to manage our 'treatment'? The question of subject's political might is not necessarily about how anymore. The existential experience inside the contemporary immense acceleration and the consecutive 'technical' fails it meets, creates, in general acceptance, an optimism, a despair, an ecstasy, an entrapment, an angst, an indifference, a prepossession, a disappointment, once a mania - once a depression. Is our social reality actually less brutal and aggressive than the epidemic mental disorders we clinically treat? In this exhibition, the experience of manic-depressive spectrum becomes the occasion for a curation that recognizes rampant inductive though loops, suicidal ideations, disputed self-confidence, addictive pleasures in dysphoria in artistic practices of creators who study the current. The space of ESTO Association, with its central column, its surrounding vertical boundaries -transparent and blind- and its individual moving and immobile elements, incorporates, in dialogues with the artworks, a spatial manifestation of the discourse. This is not an exhibition of the 'mentally ill' and argues for a visibility on the aesthetics of thought.
