Summary

The city of Kos underwent changes that altered its form and size after the earthquake of April 1933. The aim of this thesis, following a search in the Italian archives of the island and a bibliographical search, is first to examine the new city designed by the Italians, which emerged from the debris of a natural disaster, and foremost to examine whether its character and qualities have been preserved over the years. This thesis is structured in three chapters. In the first chapter, a brief review of the history of the city is presented, from its foundation until shortly prior to the beginning of the Italian occupation on the island. The aim of this chapter is to analyze how the historical events that occurred on the island have shaped the city of Kos, as seen by the Italians during their arrival in the Dodecanese. The second chapter provides an extensive description of the Italian interventions on the urban fabric of the city, both before and especially after the earthquake of 1933. The third chapter analyses the interventions on the urban fabric between the end of the Italian occupation and the present day and examines the extent to which the Italian urban characteristics of the city of Kos have been preserved or altered.
