Summary

It is a fact that suppliers play a crucial role in a company's production chain and, in the long term, its sustainability. Selecting suppliers is a complex yet highly valuable process, constituting a fundamental component of a quality assurance system. Nowadays, it is observed that companies primarily focus on economic criteria when selecting suppliers, seeking low-cost offers and thereby overlooking other significant criteria. However, given that the modern business environment is constantly evolving and the environmental crisis is intensifying, the relationship between a company and its suppliers must achieve maximum efficiency. Consequently, due to the importance of this issue, new methods for evaluating and selecting suppliers are continuously being developed. The aim of this study is to examine the criteria and methods used by contemporary businesses for evaluating and selecting suppliers and to delve into the application of an appropriate method based on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). More specifically, the first chapter will elaborate on all the necessary concepts to clarify the problem and describe the operational functioning of a company. The second chapter will provide a historical overview of various methods applied in the past and thoroughly examine supplier management. The third chapter will develop an appropriate methodology for evaluating and selecting suppliers using MCDA, while the fourth chapter will apply the developed model to a company in Crete. In collaboration with the company, which will evaluate its suppliers based on the ISO 9001 quality assurance system, the conclusions of this study and suggestions for further research will be presented.
