Περίληψη

A three-dimensional model for contaminanttransport resulting from the dissolution of multicomponentnonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) pools in threedimensionalsaturated subsurface formations is developed. The solution is obtained numerically by a finite-differencescheme, and it is suitable for homogeneous porous mediawith unidirectional interstitial velocity. Each dissolvedcomponent may undergo first-order decay and may sorbunder local equilibrium conditions. It is also assumed thatthe dissolution process is mass transfer limited. The nonaqueousphase activity coefficients of the NAPL poolcomponents are evaluated at each time step. The modelbehavior is illustrated through a synthetic example witha NAPL pool consisting of a mixture of TCA (1,1,2-trichloroethane) and TCE (trichloroethylene). The numericalsolution presented in this work is in good agreementwith a recently developed analytical solution for the specialcase of a single component NAPL pool. The resultsindicate the importance of accounting for the necessarychanges in the organic phase activity which significantlyaffects the equilibrium aqueous solubility
