Summary

—We investigate the user capacity, throughput, anddelay characteristics of a mobile slotted ALOHA direct-sequencecode-division-multiple-access (DS-CDMA) link with dedicatedsignatures under multipath fading and packet-rate adaptive antennaarray signal reception. For a given system transmission bitrate, the packet size is designed to be sufficiently small to conformwith the coherence time of the channel. Then, on an individualpacket-by-packet basis, a phase-ambiguous spatial-temporalchannel estimate is produced by a blind (unsupervised) eigensubspaceprocedure. The space–time channel estimate is phasecorrected via a few pilot packet mid-amble bits and used forjoint spatial-temporal multiple-access-interference suppressionaccording to the principles of auxiliary-vector filtering. Subsequently, packet success probabilities are derived in the presenceor absence of forward error correction and are used to evaluatethe throughput and delay characteristics of the link
