In the present work, a combined approach was adopted to improve the HPLC separation between the aromatic groups in petroleum fractions. Firstly, the analytical conditions were optimized with respect to the influence that the mobile phase composition bears on the peak resolution. Secondly, the derived HPLC-UV-DAD signal between 254 nm and 330 nm of a heavy gasoil fraction was processed using the Evolving Factor Analysis (EFA) method and the elution times of the aromatic subfractions were determined. It is demonstrated that the method achieves to determine precisely the elution profiles of the main aromatic groups based on the differences in their UV spectrum patterns.
