Περίληψη

Flooding is one of the most common natural disasters worldwide, leadingto economic losses and loss of human lives. This paper highlights thehydrological effects of multi-temporal land use changes in flood hazardwithin the Yialias catchment area, located in central Cyprus. Calibratedhydrological and hydraulic models were used to describe the hydrologicalprocesses and internal basin dynamics of the three major sub-basins, inorder to study the diachronic effects of land use changes. For theimplementation of the hydrological model, land use, soil andhydrometeorological data were incorporated. The climatic and stream flowdata were derived from rain and flow gauge stations located in the widerarea of the watershed basin. In addition, the land use and soil datawere extracted after the application of object oriented nearest neighboralgorithms of ASTER satellite images. Subsequently, the CA-Markov chainanalysis was implemented to predict the 2020 Land use/Land cover (LULC)map and incorporate it to the hydrological impact assessment. Theresults denoted the increase of runoff in the catchment area due to therecorded extensive urban sprawl phenomenon of the last decade.
