In recent years, renewable energy has been increasingly attracting the interest of the worldwide community. This trend is because of two main reasons. The first has to do with the devastating effects that the use of mineral resources -such as lignite, carbon, oil, and gas- has to our environment, due to the huge amounts of CO2 released into the atmosphere when such minerals are burned. The second reason is the ever-increasing global demand for electricity, combined with a forecasted shortage of mineral energy reserves. This means that, in the developed world, there is a huge need to integrate more renewable electricity generating units and optimize their mode of operation and penetration into the power systems at the same time.On the basis of this need, this study examines models of optimization for the unit integration problem, as well as the problem of economic distribution of load amongst the different units of an electrical energy system under different alternative energy penetration scenarios. The aim of this study is to draw conclusions on the process and method of implementing the optimization, on the behavior of systems in penetration fluctuations, as well as on the benefits and technical problems due to penetration. In addition, this study provides a brief description of electricity systems, renewable energy sources, and their advantages.
