Summary

The pupil is a small black hole in the middle of the eye and the iris is the colored part. When light is shone upon the eye, the iris constricts, reducing the pupil in size, in order to calibrate the brightness inside the eye. Respectively, when no light is present, the pupil dilates. This phenomenon is called Pupillary Light Reflex. The pupillary reflex is controlled by the Autonomous Nervous System (ANS). Consequently, any extraordinary behavior during measurement may indicate underlying neurological problems. Pupillometry is the study of recording the changes of the pupil’s diameter, using a light stimulus. Scientific research has shown that pupillometry can be used to detect some neurological and psychological conditions. Pupillometry may also be used as a detection tool for illicit substance use. For the purposes of this project, a custom pupillometric device was created from scratch, along with the software that interacts with it. The Graphical User Interface provides all the necessary details that the examiner should require during an examination. All the results are calculated by the software, using algorithms created specifically for this project. Most pupillometric projects prefer white color LEDs that cover most of the visible spectrum. In this project we will extend our focus to multicolor (monochromatic) stimuli, in order to record and report any sensitivity to specific wavelengths. This pupillometric device is a very powerful tool in the hands of neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, as well as psychiatrists.
