The aim of this thesis is the improvement of the energy system of the building complex of the Orthodox Academy of Crete located in in the region of Chania. For this purpose, a model of the energy performance of the building complex is developed based on the EnergyPlus software. A simulation of the energy performance of the building complex is performed, on an annual time scale, providing the hourly energy demand for heating, cooling and electricity. Alternative energy management scenarios are then considered through the expansion of the existing 50 kWp installed photovoltaic system, combined with a water-air heat pump, and energy storage systems. Appropriate models of the alternative hybrid energy systems are developed in HOMER Energy software and annual simulations of their behaviors are carried out in order to define their optimal size. The assessment of the alternative systems is based on both economic and environmental sustainability indicators.
