The purpose of the work is to analyze the kinetic behavior of the soil formations in the wider area of an open pit mine, which is developed near an adjacent settlement and to assess the minimum possible distance of the front of the excavation from the settlement, in order to avoid unpleasant consequences on the adjacent structures.Initially, the geology-tectonics and seismicity of the research area was investigated. In order to simulate the kinetic behavior of the excavation, the finite element method was applied and the PLAXIS software, version V.8 was used. Also, the statutory model of simulation of soil behavior used, is the "Hardening Soil Model" (HSM).Then the design of the model and the simulation of the excavation took place, using the necessary geotechnical parameters for each geological formation. In addition, the expected deformations-movements of the model as well as the deformations of the ground surface in relation to the distance from the front of the excavation, were calculated.Based on the allowable values of displacements to avoid problems in the adjacent structures, the minimum distance of the excavation front from the settlement was estimated.
