Summary

It is widely known and commonly accepted that the higher percentage of the energy consumption across Europe arises from the construction sector which is increasingly developed. This energy production is achieved through the burning of fossil fuels. The increased use of these mineral resources, such as carbon, lignite, petroleum, and natural gas, is the main reason for the release of huge quantities of CO2 in the atmosphere. As far as the buildings are concerned, in the context of restraining CO2 emissions and climate change, the energy efficiency is now a special part of the European Guidelines. The aim of the energy efficiency in the construction sector is to reduce the energy demands, by creating detox conditions from the fossil fuels. This is something that reduces the CO2 emissions. Even though the energy saving is not the solution to the problem, finding new technological methods free from fossil fuels is a major step in reducing energy use. Using natural sources of lighting, on the other hand, is free from burning fossil fuels, and at the same time, it creates better and more comfortable conditions for people in their houses and in their workplace, and it increases productivity.Guided by the principle of sustainable development, and in general, the need for detox from the energy that stems from the burning of fossil fuels, in this thesis I will present innovative systems of natural lighting. The natural lighting systems, which can be found in the lighting shelves and the lighting pipes, are used for the access or the improvement of the natural lighting levels in a place. Specifically, in this thesis, the experimental and theoretical approach of the efficiency of the lighting pipes are analyzed and presented. In the context of the European program HERB, the Building Atmosphere Research Group of the University of Athens in cooperation with the Technical University of Crete developed an innovative lighting system. This lighting system is an energy-efficient technology that consists of a lightweight pipe and an artificial lighting system (LED). These, in combination with the natural and artificial lighting, make the lighting level in the test room stable. This system was developed and is tested in the University of Athens since February 2014.After processing the results of the experiment and comparing them to the results of the simulation software Energy Plus, some equations were derived which can predict the brightness level in a room where there is a lighting pipe. Finally, these results were compared to the required illumination levels, which are determined by the standards of the Greek Standardization Organization for indoor workplaces.Throughout the whole study of this experiment, the processing of the results, and the simulation that took place, it has been proved that the lighting pipe has a greater efficiency when the position of the sun is in the highest level of the sky, i.e. in the middle of the day and mostly during summertime. Moreover, the model that Energy Plus uses for simulating these kind of systems was proved reliable and it can be used for the prediction of the brightness indoors approaching the real situation to a large extent.
