Summary

Healthcare Waste (HCW) is a special category of waste whose handling, treatment and disposal require particular attention. Each year in Greece, an average of 200.000 tn are produced of that kind of waste, whose 15% is hazardous. Therefore, the methods of processing and management besides being special are also cost-effective. In recent years, there has been talk of a new economic model, also known as the “Circular Economy” model. Circular Economy is based on the reuse of materials, which leads to an increase in their life cycle and, on the other hand, to saving money and raw materials. This model has been shown to have more benefits than the linear one, with examples being enhanced competitiveness and economic and environmental sustainability, encouraging innovative technologies and creating new jobs. This thesis evaluates the procedure followed for the waste management of the Venizeleion Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, as well as the supply of materials used in the facility, with the main emphasis on plastic materials, because the plastic is a widespread material, easy to recycle and reuse, but difficult to biodegrade from the environment, thereby exacerbating serious environmental problems such as bioaccumulation. Based on the annual budget of hospital expenditure and waste generated, useful conclusions were deduced and solutions were proposed on how the circular economy model can be applied to the healthcare unit’s plastic materials.
