Summary

In the past few years we've seen a growth in the development of photovoltaic panels that can be used as structural materials in buildings. The purpose of this dissertation is to minimize the cost of energy production in such constructions by finding the optimal combination of productive area and energy management methods throughout the daily and seasonal cycles using schedules for each electric appliance based on their use and power requirements. The algorithm developed for this study can simulate and optimize: a) PV system connected to the electrical grid and battery arrays, b) PV systems connected only to the power grid and c) completely autonomous PV system. The innovation presented here is the discovery of the optimal combination of productive area and operating times for the most power hungry appliances in a building. This combination can offer up to a 10% decrease in the net energy costs of the building when compared to existing PV system design methodologies.
