Summary

The present thesis explores the various perceptions and approaches towards death, in an attempt to deconstruct it. There is nothing consolidated and certain during our lives, despite the inevitable event of death. The denial of death is automatically the denial of life. The starting point of this thesis was the now abandoned building of the Former Judicial Prison on Giaboudaki Str. in Chania, as an empty and uncanny place. Taking into account the intense religious activity of the area as well the Necropolis of ancient Kydonia, the new use that is proposed is that of a Crematorium. The building is a shelter for the relatives of the deceased, a “walled city” of the dead. A pause in the often chaotic urban fabric, which strangely becomes part of the city.
