Summary

The topic of the research project is the identification and evaluation of strategies for the energy upgrade of traditional stone houses in Crete. Improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings has great potential for mitigating the effects of global warming. The aim is to create a handbook for the architect that promotes the existing architectural heritage, traditional techniques taking into account modern needs in view of the ecological crisis. Methodologically, the research is made initially bibliographical and then by reporting examples identified after field research. The present research paper focuses on the historic stone traditional houses of Crete and does not present energy proposals for historic monuments or buildings with other uses. In order to achieve the objective of the work, it is taken into account:- The framework of Greece and the European Union regarding the policies of energy upgrading.- Problems and difficulties of energy upgrading.- Architectural interventions-restorations and how they can be combined with energy upgrading.
