Summary

The evolution of acoustics played a crucial role in the construction and design of music halls, and scientists such as Yasuhisa Toyota helped advance the field through his innovative and visionary work. The purpose of this paper is to study the parallel course of acoustics with that of music performance halls, as the development of the former plays a crucial role in the design of the latter and vice versa. The first chapter presents music performance halls over time, their typologies, and the criteria of good acoustics. In the second, important scholars and their work that contributed to the development of acoustics as science are mentioned. The work of Toyota Yasuhisa is then discussed along with important concert halls that he has studied to date. The paper concludes with the architectural principles on which he based the design of music halls and the innovations he brought to acoustics which prove that he is one of the best in the world. Overall, this paper seeks to present a comprehensive picture of the importance of acoustic design for music performance halls and to highlight the mark Toyota Yasuhisa has left on acoustics.
