Summary

Europe's historic city centres are constantly challenged by the rapidly changing social, economic and environmental conditions of modern times. Maintaining a balance between the preservation of cultural heritage and the socio-economic development of a historic city can no longer be achieved in traditional ways and integrated policies are required. The object of this research paper is to study integrated urban heritage conservation strategies in historic cities within the framework of UNESCO's Historic Urban Landscape principles. The case of the Historic Centre of Naples, which became an UNESCO site in 1995, is studied in terms of its longitudinal approaches to protection, integrated conservation and sustainable urban regeneration. Τhe European programmes in which it has participated for its development, preservation and the response to contemporary urban challenges are analyzed, and the impact of these programmes on its historic environment and its human potential is evaluated.
