Summary

In architecture, materials and techniques are something we cannot separate, for every material there is a technique which it will be applied. This research work aims to investigate the architects whose materials and techniques are a key element of their architecture. It is a biographical review of some of the most influential architects of the 20th and 21st centurie that begins with their early years and delves into the evolution of their architecture. Through this research, a conclusive table was conducted which divides the architects based on their geographical origin into categories according to their obsession with materials, techniques or a combination of the two but also without material for paper architects. Particular emphasis is placed on their choice to use materials beyond their properties as structural means but also as aesthetic ones, with the help of Semper's theory about surface. The aim is to answer questions about their obsession, if it is due to their personal expression, if they were influenced by their environment or even if these architects have something in common.
