Summary

Southwest of Chania lies a forgotten place. The province of Selino, despite its unique natural landscape and significant history, is one of the municipalities experiencing the largest population decline in Greece. The local economy is based on mass tourism and complex farming systems, leading to the population's shift from the inland to the coastal part of the region. This movement has resulted in a large percentage of building stock being left unused. The school buildings, which have become inactive over the years, present particular architectural and cultural interest. This thesis aims to revive these school units by creating a network among the villages of the Municipality, selecting six schools from all its local communities. The selection of buildings was based on two main factors: their location relevant to the main hubs of Kantanos and Paleochora and the unique characteristics of each village. The proposed design is based on the architecture of the existing schools and can create a coherent whole with the environment. The chosen uses aim at the local and super-local development of the municipality, facilitating the daily life of its inhabitants and decongesting the capital. Therefore, the goal is to revive this forgotten place by redesigning the abandoned buildings.
