Summary

What is space essentially, and how is it experienced by humans? Can its impact on an individual's psychology be so strong as to create eternal bonds with it? Is it possible for architectural space to assist in evoking the user's emotions? These are the critical questions addressed and attempted to be answered in the present study, through a personal reflection on spaces that I once interacted with and that influenced me. The places analyzed vary from those designed by significant architects to simple everyday spaces that host our moments. However, they all share a common characteristic: they stimulate emotion through certain specific features of their architecture. The analysis in the paper begins with the theoretical framework where the concept of space is examined through the lens of philosophy, its relationship with humans, and the meanings it conveys to them, as well as the concept of atmosphere. The next chapter discusses the meeting ground of architecture and psychoanalysis, examining the common concepts for these two sciences related to the familiar – unfamiliar dichotomy, fantasy, and memory. The main research of the paper analyzes the spaces that influenced me. The discussion on each space starts from the perspective of a child who interacts with the space for the first time and concludes with the interpretative view of the modern architect that emerged from it. Thus, the study is completed with the architectural vocabulary gained from the above analysis, which enhances the spatial experience and creates the so-called poetic architecture that moves and creates bonds.
