Περίληψη

Base isolation systems have become a significant element of a structure to enhance reliability during an earthquake excitation. It is an acknowledged method to reduce the transmission of ground acceleration into the structural system, by increasing the natural period of the structure. The need for a base isolation system may arise in an area of high seismic activity, if increased safety and post-earthquake operability is required. One kind of methods of base isolation is the Friction Pendulum Isolation System (FPS). This study centres on the development of a dynamic responce analysis of a structural scheme isolated with frictional pendulum system. Results of the mathematical model developed are presented for two structure examples. The first one deals with the seismic response of a conventional fix-based rigid superstructure and the second one presents the earthquake response of a base isolated building supported on (FPS) isolators. Both structural schemes subjected on the Kobe earthquake and a numerical simulation is performed in order to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the (FPS) system.
