Summary

The sudden development of photovoltaic systems in the Chania prefecture since 2007 and on, as well as the replacement of many traditional crops with photovoltaic parks, gave the propulsion to create this thesis. Its initial goal is the recording and digitization of the photovoltaic parks located in areas that could be used for crop cultivation. Furthermore, the thesis tries to determine the investment of photovoltaic parks on farmlands from an economical standpoint, while comparing revenues and expenses as an individual, according to which of two ways he chooses to harness his/her land. For the completion of the first goal of the thesis, basic data of ArcGIS was studied, which is the main program that was used. For the second part, the theoretical background of the two parts of the economical comparison was studied - those are the photovoltaic systems and most widespread county crops. Reference was also made to the legal framework and its contribution to the development of photovoltaic systems at the expense of traditional crops, as well as the effect it had on the economical comparison. Lastly, the final maps of the agricultural photovoltaic units were presented, after which the necessary conclusions were made for the situation in the area.
