Summary

The current dissertation was prepared in order to study the upper limb prosthetics and their making. At first, their evolution is mentioned from their first appearance until the contemporary manufactures, which are categorized into aesthetic and functional devices. Then, they are subcategorized according to the way they perform their functions while the advantages and disadvantages of each case are noted. Furthermore, the optimization criteria for the construction of prosthetic limbs are emphasized, i.e. the characteristics that must be studied in order to select the appropriate manufacturing method. The method of casting for production of prosthetic limbs, as well as hybrid limbs which are manufactured in combination with the method of 3D printing, is mentioned. The second is analyzed in terms of its advantages and disadvantages. Continuing, reference is made to the e-NABLE community with a brief overview and then a description of the process of manufacturing and delivering a device to a recipient, as it was done during the certification process as a maker. Finally, the process of manufacturing the Phoenix Hand device selected from the e-NABLE open source library for 3D printing and assembly was analyzed. Both the materials and equipment used and the parameters that were configured are listed, while photos with the printing of the parts and the assembly of the final device, are presented.
