Summary

The present research paper examined the presence of graphic design in the built environment of Athens and delved into a new field of design, Environmental Graphic Design (EGD). Through personal documentation and exploration, the initial identification of graphic elements in the urban landscape of Athens was carried out. To define the framework within which the exploration in the city center was conducted, the term flâneur and the concept of the city image were introduced. Graphic design is analyzed as a means of visual communication, with the development and management of graphic elements to convey messages. Following this, there is a reference to the term Environmental Graphic Design, which uses design techniques to enhance the user experience in navigating a space. Subsequently, through literature review, analysis, and historical overview, the research aimed to explain the spread of graphic design in the built environment of Athens and the significance and value it has now acquired. Along with the development and expansion of cities, the need for EGD increases. EGD is called upon to address the problems brought about by globalization, consumerism, isolation, and alienation. The main goal of environmental design is to create relationships between places and the people who visit or live in them. Presenting examples of EGD applications reveals its aspects and capabilities. It proves to be an important tool for enhancing the city’s image, creating an environment of communication and interaction, easily recognizable and pedestrian-friendly.
