This paper seeks ways in which the dwelling becomes familiar to the user and promotes freedom of expression in their personal space. It analyses and describes the "feeling of the familiar" through S. Freud's thesis on the uncomfortable and Pallasmaa's thesis on the multi-sensory experience of space. By exploring how the familiar could be related to architectural principles, two very important tools (means) for achieving this goal are analysed: participatory design and flexibility. In the first case the user is part of the design process and communicates his/her needs, while in the second, even if he/she is not involved, the architect anticipates and anticipates the future diverse needs of the future inhabitant(s). The two terms are defined and commented on through examples corresponding to levels of participation and forms of flexibility respectively, and finally the completed project of Lacaton & Vassal in Bordeaux, which follows the two design principles mentioned above, is analysed and conclusions are drawn.
