Summary

The study explores the spatial footprint of the urban development of Athens in the Ampelokipoi area, with a focus on Panormou Street. The research aims to analyze the urban and social structure of Panormou as a characteristic street of a constantly evolving Athenian neighborhood. The broader study area is defined by the streets Panormou, Trifylia, Efstathiou Lampsa, as well as Alexandras and Kifisias Avenues.Panormou Street, which is laid out as a quarter-circle, together with the linear Louizis Riancour Street, forms a complex with a multidimensional architectural and urban planning character. The area's original rural character experienced its first major period of urbanization with the construction of public utility buildings. The second period began with the arrival of refugees after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, and the third, in the post-war period, was marked by a wave of internal migration, which led to single- and two-story buildings being replaced by apartment blocks constructed between 1960 and 1980 through the method of antiparochi (land-for-flats exchange).Social life is characterized by the strong interaction between residents and migrant groups, which have settled in the area in recent decades. This interaction is further enhanced by their presence in public spaces, such as squares, which function as hubs of social interaction. The historical and social evolution of the area reflects the broader urban history of Athens.
