Summary

The element of water has always played an important role in the man - made urban environments. Over time, the relationship between water systems and urban ecosystems develops increasingly intriguing and complex dynamics, with city-water interface zones expressing the widest range of these dynamics. These zones, which are the main field of our research, are treated, interpreted and processed differently by each coastal city and its local authorities.Naturally, every city faces different challenges in terms of its waterfronts, harbor and any other point of their contact with the element of water. Abandoned port areas, problematic waterfronts and coastal zones cut off from the city make up dysmorphic landscapes, which are often the norm rather than the exception in modern European cities.It is therefore considered imperative to draw up studies and intervention strategies in the coastal zones, with many of the largest European cities having already taken or completed corresponding initiatives. But what exactly are the needs that lead local authorities to intervene in coastal zones and how exactly do they achieve their reactivation and reconnection with the urban fabric?
