In this work, the integration of SmartPV technology (i.e., smart photovoltaic cell-level integrated inverters) in Zero Energy Building (ZEB) concept is proposed, in the context of the strict EU guidelines regarding the transformation of the existing high energy consuming buildings into ZEBs, until 2030. ZEBs feature reduced energy demands, since most of their needs are met by the collective operation of multiple Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Moreover, the economic impact of the self-consumption buildings is not negligible in terms of real economy, as they can safeguard savings for further investments. Under this light, photovoltaics (PVs) are the most promising and energy efficient RES, with reasonable payback periods, especially in Mediterranean climate conditions. The advantages of SmartPV technology for small-scale residential installations, regarding efficiency and total electric energy yield are highlighted. Finally, a sustainability assessment study, using the Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) tool, is presented.
