Summary

The identification of biomarkers in geochemical studies is an extremely important field in petroleum research, as their structure provides valuable information for the evaluation of the organic matter. Today, the qualitative assessment of petroleum components is conducted using mainly mass spectrometry. In this thesis, the retention behavior of biomarkers in chromatographic analyses was studied through the use of Kovats indices, with the ultimate goal of applying these indices in biomarker identification studies. The Kovats indices correspond to the retention time of compounds that elute between two adjacent normal alkanes and remain independent of the particular chromatographic system. In this study, 32 GC-MS chromatographic analyses of a standard sample from rock extract were used, with 70 identified biomarkers based on their retention time. These analyses represent both the contemporary and broader temporal profile of the GC-MS instrument. Through these studies, a database of identified biomarkers was created based on Kovats retention indices. This Kovats retention index database was evaluated for its validity and its reliability in contributing to biomarker identification studies.
