The present study focuses on the geological and geochemical analysis of the Miocene rocks of Gavdos island, with the aim of evaluating their potential as potential hydrocarbon source rocks. The study area belongs to the south Hellenic Arc, which is characterized by intense tectonic processes and a complex geological history. Two outcrops of the island have been studied, namely the GC and the GL. The strata have a Miocene age and their deposition predates the Messinian Salinity Crisis well-known event. The research was based on the application of the methodology of Rock-Eval VI pyrolysis and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis, allowing the determination of the thermal maturity and quality of the organic matter. The results showed that the rocks of the area contain organic matter of types IIΙ and IV, indicative of mixed coastal and terrestrial depositional conditions low in hydrogen but showing high oxygen concentrations. TOC values range from 0.17% to 0.42% for GC and 0.03% to 0.44%, while Tmax values range between 258°C to 569°C and 258°C to 578°C respectively. Geochemical comparison with other basins of the Eastern Mediterranean shows that the Miocene rocks of Gavdos could be favorable prospects for hydrocarbon production in their offshore analogues. The application of advanced geochemical methods can improve the accurate assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of the area and support further energy exploitation (and production) research.
