This essay examines the term monumentality in architecture through theories and examples, including buildings that belong to the past with modern interventions and "monuments" of recent years.By focusing on the architect David Chipperfield, his thoughts and work are explored with monumentality as the main axis, focusing on four of his most important works. Specifically, the refurbishment of the Neues Museum, the James-Simon-Gallery, and the extension of San Michele Cemetery are examined, focusing on the terms context, tradition, memory, form, and continuity, five terms that the architect frequently uses in his projects, while attempting the architectural analysis of each case. At the same time, through these five keywords, the highlighting of monumentality is aimed at the different aspects of each example. Also, the relationship between the old and the new, the conflicts, and the harmonies that arise are discussed.
