Summary

Manga and anime comprise a special way of exploring Japanese culture and civilization. They have enjoyed a huge rise in popularity since the 1980s when Akira was first shown in the Western world. This research paper explores the depiction of architectural elements in manga and anime, with Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira as the main example. The first chapter studies the use of architectural elements in manga and anime. It then examines a few examples of particular interest, with the aim of introducing the reader to the methods and techniques used for the architectural representation in them. The beginning of the second chapter consists of a brief biography of Katsuhiro Otomo. The rest of the chapter delves into the artist's influences that shaped his character and style, which were perfected in his depiction of the futuristic metropolis of Neo Tokyo. In the third chapter, the research focuses on Neo Tokyo, Akira's cyberpunk setting. Architectural influences such as the Metabolism movement are mentioned. The largest part consists of comparisons of selected images from Neo Tokyo, with photographs of architectural elements of modern Tokyo, aiming to highlight common features and thus demonstrate the importance of architecture in the creation of this imaginary world.
