Summary

The management of household hazardous waste (HHW) is a significant problem, as it contains toxic substances. Considering incorrect and ineffective management, HHW can cause serious consequences for the environment and public health. This thesis studies the perception, knowledge, and methods which citizens manage HHW waste. In addition, a comparative assessment of Greece management system is conducted in relation to Austria and Ukraine. A questionnaire was prepared that was available to the public and consisted of three sections: the first concerned demographic data, the second having questions about management methods and public information, and the third stating perceptions and proposed solutions. After collecting 307 complete questionnaires, a statistical analysis was performed based on the extraction of frequencies and the creation of correlations. Then, a comparative evaluation was carried out by creating a flow chart the management of Greek hazardous waste in the commercial sector, which includes household hazardous waste, with the corresponding data of Austria and Ukraine. The frequency analysis showed that there is a lack of information coming from the central government on how to properly manage household hazardous waste, a lack of collection points, and the importance of taking action to strengthen these. The correlation analysis showed that age is the demographic factor that most influences citizens' knowledge and perception, with those in the 19-35 age group not knowing and not applying proper management methods. The comparative assessment showed that Greek hazardous waste management system is somewhere between the systems of Austria and Ukraine and needs to be strengthened in terms of separate collection of such waste.
