The project investigates the traditional settlement of Chora in Folegandros, focusing on the urban and architectural transformations resulting from the island’s increasing touristic activity in recent years. The analysis combines qualitative data, such as historical archives, institutional protection frameworks, and cartographic and photographic material. Particular emphasis is placed on the evolution of the settlement prior to the onset of mass tourism and how tourism is now embedded in every aspect of the built environment. The work aims to raise questions regarding the management of cultural heritage and the implementation of sustainable strategies that could safeguard the identity of the settlement without obstructing contemporary touristic development. The choice of topic is linked both to the growing pressure faced by traditional Cycladic settlements due to tourism, and to the researcher’s personal connection to the island — a factor that has heightened observational sensitivity and awareness of its local particularities.
