Summary

This diploma thesis focuses on the traditional settlement of Chora in Folegandros, which, despite preserving a strong historical and architectural identity, is increasingly pressured by tourism. The study begins with an analysis of the existing conditions of the settlement through an urban, social, and spatial lens. Land uses, the road network, and current building regulations were examined, alongside a detailed mapping of the structure and individual qualities of the settlement’s core. Based on these findings, the thesis proposes both design and strategic interventions aimed at preserving the traditional morphology, protecting the urban fabric, and safeguarding the unique character of Chora. These interventions include regulating touristic functions, strengthening permanent residency, and redesigning the quality and function of public space.
