Summary

This diploma thesis presents the design of a contemporary elderly care facility in Chalepa, Chania. The proposal emerges as a response to the limited and underdeveloped care services currently available in the area.Situated at the boundary between natural and urban landscapes, the site offers both acoustic and visual isolation from the city, while maintaining easy access to the center via public transportation. The revitalization of the adjacent park further strengthens the complex’s connection to public space. The design follows the logic of a modern residential community, composed of two housing “neighborhoods” and central shared spaces that encourage collectivity and social interaction. Elements such as pitched roofs and the recurring use of wood foster a sense of warmth and familiarity. Courtyards, green areas, and circulation paths enhance the everyday-experience and promote contact with nature. The project aspires to highlight a new care model that transcends institutional frameworks, promoting dignified living. The aim is to challenge the negative stereotypes surrounding elderly care centers through the creation of an open, vibrant, and human-centered environment.
