Summary

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an innovative open-source, multi-head CNC machine that combines the functionalities of 3D printers, CNC routers, laser engravers , as well as automated tool changing and automatic tool alignment using a probe system, into a single device. The thesis delves into the technical intricacies of integrating multiple functionalities within the machine, enabling additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques simultaneously. In addition to the core functionalities, the proposed machine incorporates various other features to further augment its capabilities. These include automated material handling, multi-axis movement, sensing and feedback systems, and real-time monitoring and control. The design objective was to create a comprehensive manufacturing solution that streamlines the production of complex, high-quality parts.Furthermore, the open-source nature of the machine is a key aspect of this research. It enables users to customize not only the hardware and software but also the manufacturing processes to suit their specific needs. Users will have the opportunity to modify and enhance the machine, share their designs, and collectively contribute to the advancement of manufacturing technologies. Also, this thesis aims to provide insights into its transformative potential in the manufacturing industry by thoroughly investigating the design, development, and implications of the proposed multi-functional CNC machine. It highlights the benefits of integrating diverse functionalities into a single device, including improved efficiency, reduced costs, and optimized space utilization.
