Summary

The study examines the Pikrodafni Stream, a natural corridor approximately 6 kilometers long that begins in the Municipality of Ilioupoli, flows through the Municipalities of Agios Dimitrios, Palaio Faliro, and Alimos, and reaches the sea at the boundary between the latter two. The aim is to diagnose the current condition and develop strategies for the management and integration of the riparian zone into the urban fabric of Athens. The research builds on the study entitled “Redevelopment of Riverfront Areas: Reconnecting City and Nature in European Urban Centers”, employing design tools and applied case studies that highlight best practices. The analysis evaluates the entire length of the stream, focusing on four key segments: its emergence within the urban environment, its linear course, the delta, and the estuary. The study identifies urban and spatial interventions that could restore cohesion between the natural and built environment, enhance residents’ quality of life, and provide new public open spaces in a city characterized by high building density.
