This thesis introduces a head-worn Augmented Reality (AR) system designed to support real-time decision-making and enhance situational awareness in maritime operations. The system integrates GPS and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to dynamically visualize navigational routes, collision predictions, hazard zones, and critical points of interest directly within the captain’s field of view. Utilizing intuitive gaze and gesture-based interactions, it allows for hands-free operation crucial in maritime environments. Special attention is given to uncertainty visualization—employing uncertainty cones inspired by hurricane forecasting—to effectively communicate possible trajectory deviations. Evaluations conducted aboard maritime vessels demonstrated significant improvements in navigational safety, decision-making efficiency, and operational effectiveness, affirming the system’s potential impact on maritime navigation practices.
