Summary

This dissertation examines the phenomenon of overtourism in European historic city centers, focusing on Amsterdam and the distinctive Jordaan district. The objectives are to analyze the causes and impacts of overtourism, to measure its extent, and to explore potential management strategies. The methodology combines a theoretical analysis through an extensive literature review, aimed at understanding existing methods for evaluating overtourism, with qualitative research based on surveys administered to residents, visitors and local authorities and organizations in Amsterdam. The study also includes a comparative examination of the Jordaan district and other European historic centers, highlighting practices of overtourism management. The contribution of this research lies in the development of proposals for safeguarding Amsterdam’s historic centre, and more specifically the Jordaan district, as well as for the sustainable management of tourism growth, with the dual aim of protecting cultural heritage and enhancing residents' quality of life.
