The use of chatbots has rapidly evolved in recent years in various fields, such as marketing, decision support systems, education, healthcare, cultural heritage, and entertainment. This diploma thesis examines the evolution and application of chatbots in the modern era, analyzing their historical evolution from early experimental models to modern artificial intelligence technologies, such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini, and highlights the importance of chatbots in improving customer service, education, and daily human communication. Initially, an overview of the international community's evolving interest in chatbots is presented, analyzing the motivations driving their use and clarifying their usefulness in various fields. Furthermore, the impact of social stereotypes on chatbot design is highlighted, a classification of chatbots based on various criteria is provided, and their general architecture and main platforms for their creation are presented. Subsequently, the chatbot created for the purposes of this specific thesis is presented and analyzed, which was designed to meet the needs of the Municipality of Chania. Various technologies were employed in the development of the proposed chatbot, such as Javascript for the frontend, Flask for the backend, XAMPP/MySQL for recording conversation data and Tensorflow/Keras for training the internal model. The requirements and specifications for the functionality of this chatbot were determined in collaboration with the Services of the Municipality of Chania. The proposed chatbot is able to serve citizens on various issues related to the Services of the Municipality of Chania in both Greek and English languages. Finally, the results and conclusions derived from the study and comparative evaluation of the performance of both the proposed and existing chatbots are presented. This study highlights the immense prospects of chatbots, encourages further and deeper study, and contributes to the understanding of the importance and evolution of chatbots, as well as to their wider acceptance in everyday life and the professional world.
