Summary

Traditional plant varieties are the result of the collective action of many generations of farmers (planters). They constitute an important part of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture and the cornerstone of agrobiodiversity and overall biodiversity conservation. The current research thesis presents in detail the legal endorsement of traditional varieties in the international, european and national legal status quo. The relevant legislative acts, which include the most recent legal developments, including jurisprudence, are considered under the light of agrobiodiversity and biodiversity. Our main concern is to investigate whether legislation is adequate and effective or not in order to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of traditional plant varieties. The most important thing, however, is that a synthesis occurs, from the outset. The synthesis lies in considering traditional plant varieties in the immediate context of the reference, the rural landscape. The rural landscape, and, in general, the association of traditional varieties to a specific locale, is ultimately a key factor for the effective conservation and sustainable use in the current socio-economic settings. Following is a survey, conducted in various areas in the regional unit of Hania and was aimed to measure the knowledge/information of farmers/cultivators on issues concerning traditional plant varieties.
