Summary

A major problem concerning the protection of patients with movement problems is the difficulty of remote and real-time monitoring in hospital or at home so to prevent and avoid serious accidents. In this work, we developed an application called Kinect Protect Patient (K.P.P.) that takes advantage of the cloud technology to detect patients body movement using the motion sensor of Microsoft Kinect. Medical personnel (e.g. doctors) using the application could check whether the patient requires assistance (e.g. call for help) or trying perform movements that could become harmful (e.g. try to get out of the bed). Moreover. K.P.P. allows constant monitor of the recovery of patients suffering from injuries (e.g. trauma in the knee) by using a specific exercise that suggests a movement and monitors their activity. The application is designed and implemented based on gen-eral purpose cloud services (called Generic Enabler's (GEs)) that are functional blocks used to collect data from the sensor (application front-end) to forward it to the cloud ap-plication (that relies on the cloud back-end). Specifically, we utilized GEs provided by FIWARE that offers open source implementation of various key features e.g. user authen-tication and context data management. Results shown in real-time are processed and pro-vided by a cloud computing infrastructure.
