Περίληψη

Bacteriophage MS2 and ΦX174 were used as surrogates forhuman viruses in order to investigate the interaction betweenviruses and clay particles. The selected phyllosilicate clayswere kaolinite and bentonite (>90% montmorillonite). A seriesof static and dynamic experiments were conducted at twodifferent temperatures (4 and 25 °C) to investigate the effectof temperature and agitation (dynamic experiments) on virusadsorption onto clays. Appropriate adsorption isotherms weredetermined. Electrokinetic features of bacteriophages andclays were quantified at different pH and ionic strength (IS).Moreover, interaction energies between viruses and clays werecalculated for the experimental conditions (pH 7 and IS ) 2mM) by applying the DLVO theory. The experimental resultsshown that virus adsorption increases linearly with suspendedvirus concentration. The observed distribution coefficient (Kd)was higher for MS2 than ΦX174. The observed Kd values werehigher for the dynamic than static experiments, and increasedwith temperature. The results of this study provided basicinformation for the effectiveness of clays to remove viruses byadsorption from dilute aqueous solutions. No previous studyhas explored the combined effect of temperature and agitationon virus adsorption onto clays.
