Περίληψη

Most research in the area of designing andimplementing continuous media servers, whichsupport delay-sensitive data like audio andvideo, has assumed either clients with very smallmemory sizes for buffering and no secondarystorage (thin clients) or a homogeneous clientenvironment where all clients have exactly thesame performance characteristics. Bothassumptions are radically changing due to theavailability of inexpensive storage, as well as thegreat diversity of clients that exist now and willexist in the future. In this work we look moreclosely at the implications that the existence ofclients with diverse performance characteristicsmay have in the server design. Our approach isexperimental. We use conventional hardware forservers and clients and examine bottlenecks andoptimization options systematically, in order toreduce jitter and increase the maximum numberof clients that the system can support. We showthat the diversity of client performancecharacteristics can be taken into account, so thatall clients are well supported for delay-sensitiveretrieval in a heterogeneous environment. Wealso show that their characteristics can beexploited to maximize server throughput underserver memory constrains.
