We describe an experimental multimedia informationsystem for an office environment which isbeing developed in the University of Toronto. Multimediamessages are composed of text, image, voiceand attribute information. We discuss issues relatedto internal representation, presentation and cornmunicationwith the outside world, content addressahilityin the various data types, user interface andaccess methods.1. lntroduct.ionThere is a growing interest among computer scienceresearchers in office information systems thathandle complex data such as text, attributes, graphics, images, and voice ([VLDB 63a], [VLDB 83b]). Wewill call the unit of multimedia information a m&-timed& message. Multimedia messages are composedof attribute, text, image and voice information. Some of the functions that these systems may provideare Ming of multimedia information, contentaddressability of multimedia messages, and multimediamessage transmission and reconstruction ina different site. There are several important problems associatedwith the development of such systems. Some ofthese problems are identified next:
