The effectiveness of sustainable waste management planning in EU countries lies in achieving a variety of objectives derived from Landfill, Packaging and Waste Framework EU directives. The present study describes a Decision Support Software tool, which was developed to assist decision-makers to develop alternative waste management scenarios according to the targets to be achieved in case study regions, evaluate these scenarios against a predefined set of quantitative and qualitative criteria and, finally, support the competent authorities in deciding for the most appropriate waste management strategy to be applied. The results from the application of the developed tool in the region of Attiki in Greece are presented and discussed.
